If the child is devoted to animals, unless you are the actual parents of the child, it may not be wise to actually purchase an animal as a childrens gift. All domestic pets require ongoing regular attentions, – and food and other requisites. Many creatures incur vets fees and animal insurance charges. So it can turn out to be quite hard work, - and a rather costly gift for a family, – for many years following the presentation of the animal. Also, the child may tire of looking after his/her pet - once the initial novelty has worn off. This, generally, results in the parents needing to care for the creature. And, unfortunately (some would say) most cats and dogs moult hair constantly, and leave muddy paw prints, and some can be a little destructive in different ways. Some parents may begin to disapprove of the new arrival.

Thus, one very worthwhile consideration, for childrens gifts involving animals, is the sponsorship, or adoption, of creatures. The upkeep of zoos, dolphinariums, animal sanctuaries and the like, are very costly to maintain. Many of these places are now requesting animal sponsorship, or adoption, – in order to help towards the daily costs of the comforts, and needs, of all the creatures in their care. With regards to zoos, the cost of sponsorship, or adoption, will be very dependent on the type of creature you will wish to sponsor, or adopt, as a child’s gift. A small bird, for example, is likely to cost much less to sponsor, or adopt, than, say, a tiger.
