Childrens Music

As the title suggests, “childrens music” is the broad term used to cover every conceivable aspect of music for kids.

Most of this page is devoted to childrens music – relating to youngsters learning to play musical instruments and/or wishing to be involved in singing activities – but other things which could be included under the banner of “childrens music” include such things as childrens videos and childrens DVDs, kids music recordings, musical museums, childrens music albums, pop stars, teenage music magazines, mp3 players and music posters.

It is never too soon to introduce an offspring to musical sounds. Young babies are often soothed by listening to lullabies, tinkling bells, pre-birth sounds, and oceanic watery noises. Babies in the womb listen to “womb music” for many months previous to their birth – and recent studies reveal that these pre-birth sounds can often be remembered for many moons beyond the childhood years. There are many items, and rocking contraptions, available to purchase on-line, or in the shops, involving sounds which young babies adore.

Older babies, and toddlers, will start to appreciate a wider range of childrens music – in the form of musical melodies, nursery rhymes and childrens songs. Childrens songs have lyrics penned with children in mind.

With regards to toddlers, and very young children, childrens music education should always be regarded as a fun pastime. Musical playtimes for very young kids include such things as - singing along to childrens songs on a childrens CD or a piano, joining in the words and tunes of childrens nursery rhymes, playing with items such as toy xylophones, chimes, cymbals, toy pianos and tambourines. Parents often make different forms of musical instruments for their young ones entertainment. Shakers can be made easily – but the lid must be “child proof”. Jam jars, containing differing amounts of water, have the ability to produce the individual notes of an octave (if the correct amount of water is poured into the jars) when the child taps the glass jars with a spoon or wooden stick. Inverted saucepans make an ideal set of drums. These basic childrens music sessions can amuse children for hours. They provide a good basis for initial discoveries of musical beats and rhythms - and an awareness of sequences of musical notes within the scale.

Even at a very young age, a child with “an ear for music” - has the ability to commence learning a musical instrument. Small violins, miniature sets of drums, childrens guitars, child-size ukuleles, banjos, recorders, and many other instruments besides, – are purposely made in different sizes. As a child becomes older, if he/she is originally learning to play, say, a quarter-size violin, he/she will then be ready to exchange the original childrens fiddle with a half-size violin. With regards to childrens piano lessons, it is customary for a family to own a full-size piano. Initially, it is often easier for a child to learn to play this type of musical instrument – by practicing on a child size electronic keyboard.

If a child is keen to learn a musical instrument, or if parents would like their youngster to learn to play musical instruments, the customary way of learning is to register the offspring with an individual tutor – for private childrens music lessons. There are also childrens music classes where several kids may be in attendance at the sessions. If a parent is proficient in an instrument himself/herself, the parent may have the ability to teach the child himself/herself. There are also many excellent childrens music books available to purchase – which are informative on the subject of learning to play different musical instruments.

There are numerous childrens bands, and childrens orchestras, which your child may like to attend. It is usually necessary for a youngster to have at least mastered a basic knowledge of a musical instrument before joining a band or orchestra. But there are certain fun bands which make their own special and simplistic sounds – often from “home grown” instruments. Childrens brass bands, childrens pipe bands, childrens baroque bands, and bands and orchestras which involve a wide variety of various musical instruments, are just some of the many types of bands where it may be necessary for a child to have some level of knowledge of playing an instrument – before applying to join.

Children who appear to be particularly gifted in musical instruments - may wish to be educated at a music school. Many of these childrens music schools are private schools – and, therefore, charge attendance fees. Sometimes, there are grants and bursaries available for musically gifted children.

If your child has desires to sing, make endeavours to find a local organization which involves childrens choral singing, childrens operatic groups, or any other forms of societies which involves childrens music specializing in singing. If a parent does not have “an ear for music”, it may be necessary to establish if your child has the ability to sing in tune – before making any enquiries regarding your child joining an amateur or professional music society – such as a theatrical society specializing in musicals.

With regards to beat, being able to keep to the beat of the music - is just as important in singing as it is when playing a musical instrument. Some parents send their sons/daughters to a professional singing teacher. Childrens singing tutors can be very beneficial in helping a child’s singing performance. They establish if the child can keep in tune. They endeavour to assist the child to understand the various rhythms of music. The importance of correct breathing is explained – and needs regularly practicing by the child. Concentration on bodily movements, facial movements, and giving feeling to a song, are all a necessary part of a song presentation. Childrens singing teachers attempt to teach a child to read music from music sheets and music books. Remembering lyrics to songs is vital – with emphases required on certain words of the lyrics. Many, if not most, professional singers will have had singing lessons at some time during the course of their lives. Usually, it isn’t sufficient just to have a good voice. A good singing voice, and singing performance, can be enhanced and developed enormously by the right kind of coaching.

Keenness to learn plays a huge part in the achieving the goal. The more music practice sessions which take place, and the more a child is determined to master his/her instrument or singing abilities – by disciplining himself/herself, the more there is a likelihood of remarkable improvements over the years. Although, like any extraordinary abilities which people possess in other fields, childrens music accomplishments very much depends on the individual’s capabilities. (Top professional footballers and ballet dancers, for instance, have a special inner ability. Their eventual adult performances are not completely a result of many hours of practice sessions). World renowned opera singers, and concert pianists and other ‘highly polished’ musicians, have a ‘built in” genius - which countless other vocalists and musicians could only ever dream about.

If a child reaches a very acceptable level in childrens music, either vocally or instrumentally, and if he/she is keen to perform professionally as an adult, a musical future often stems from a kid’s performances at childrens talent shows – or a childrens talent contests.

A youngster can only make musical progressions throughout the years - by constant dedication, and strong commitments, to his/her particular line in childrens music. Many musicians and vocalists, who are masters in their musical fields in adulthood, have often achieved their extremely high musical standards - as a direct result from “just enjoying playing” as a very young child.
