In general, babies toys, and childrens toys, refers to everything imaginable for babies fun and development - and kids enjoyment and education.

Even before a child is born, the baby boy or girl may receive presents in advance of his/her birth. Baby shower parties are very popular in some regions – and it is customary for the guests to take along suitable gifts for the unborn child. Childrens novelty gifts, and childrens unique toys, are often presented as gifts at baby shower parties.

Alternatively, the hostess may prefer to request no presents for the forthcoming arrival – and instead, request favours from each guest on arrival. These requests could be picked out randomly from a hat. The favours could include such things as baby sitting on a particular night or taking the baby for a walk in his/her pushchair during the warmer months.

Although not strictly speaking childrens toys, baby pacifiers (dummies - or soothers) are often the first things bought – in the process of helping to keep a tiny tot contented – in the hours between a baby’s feed times. Therefore, it could be said that baby pacifiers have a loose connection to kiddies toys.

As babies develop in size and abilities, they love to play with nursery toys. Baby rattles come in all manner of shapes and sizes, colours and materials. (Wooden baby rattles were probably one of the first childrens toys, ever invented by mankind, for babies). The young ones love baby swings and other contraptions which involve movement for babies. Dolls made of soft fabrics, childrens teddies and furry animals, are usually classed as childrens toys. These are always a firm favourite with all babies – and help the tiny ones make sense of all the numerous, and different, types of materials.

Squeaky toys, musical mobiles and wind chimes also help to keep a young baby entertained and occupied for short spells of time – as well as musical toys, and other baby toys which make wonderful noises - such as water splashes, sounds of the seashore, or animal and bird noises. Presenting different sounds constantly to babies - helps towards their better understanding of all the millions of usual, and more unusual, surrounding noises on our planet.

Baby bath toys help to make bath times a joy for babies – and nowadays, there are thousands of choices of baby bath toys available to purchase.

Whenever funds permit, toys for babies should be replaced fairly regularly – as baby reaches his/her next stage of progression in his/her development.

Pull along toys, and push along toys, are favoured by toddlers. Basic childrens indoor games generally start to have a role to play in the lives of toddlers. Kids wooden jigsaws and simple childrens puzzle games, childrens building bricks, and small musical instruments such as toy pianos, childrens xylophones and small sets of drums, plus all the toddler development toys, are usually quite appropriate playthings for the two year olds and upwards.

Childrens boy dolls, and especially childrens girl dolls, abound in their billions around the world. Many pre-school children love to own dolls – as well as huge numbers of older children.

Household items on miniature scales, for instance toy telephones, toy vacuum cleaners, toy sewing machines and toy cookers, still provide great pleasures to own for many a toddler and infant.

Young children soon learn the arts of catching and kicking a ball – generally through interplay with adults and older children.

Nowadays, older kids in particular, often prefer to own a well-known special boy doll, or girl doll, –regularly spending hours dressing, and undressing, these particular dolls in all the different costumes, and/or uniforms, which are available on the market. Manufacturers of these popular childrens dolls sometimes offer slightly different appearances – for dolls within the same range. Dolls with one particular look may be called by a different personal name to another doll in the same range. Some of the “main character” dolls in these special ranges belong to families, or have a partner, - and their families and/or partners can also be available to purchase – along with many of the dolls accessories and/or their individual dolls houses. Dolls houses may change in design over the years – but are still very popular childrens toys. And other more traditional childrens toys include toy garages, toy cars and toy trucks. Train sets still remain fairly high on the lists of the most popular toys for kids.

Certain toy manufacturers make very popular childrens creative toy kits. Usually, the individual pieces are made from pieces of plastic, cardboard, wood, paper or metal – and these can be used to construct the likes of a house, birds and animals, machines of all descriptions, an aeroplane and other types of vehicles.

There are numerous different childrens board games, and other types of childrens games, available to purchase in the shops or online. These cover all aspects of abilities, age groups and personal preferences. Childrens jig-saw puzzles are still hugely popular. Draught sets, chess sets, snakes and ladders, and many other childrens board games of yesteryear, are still enjoyed today - by children around the globe. Many less traditional games have now taken a stronghold of the childrens toy market – and new games for kids arrive in the marketplace each year – often inspired by a popular television programme, book or film.

Childrens computer games are becoming increasingly popular. Some of these reflect the traditional games played by children. But new innovations in computer games are being dreamed up daily - by countless folk.

Outdoor toys covers everything from a tennis ball to a football or beach ball, childrens croquet sets, childrens slides, climbing frames and swings, climbing ropes, tree houses, and small trampolines.

In a manner of speaking, childrens bikes could also be classed as childrens outdoor toys.

Kids toys are so numerous and varied – that they always make excellent Christmas presents and birthday gifts. On these very special occasions, many youngsters (especially the younger ones) would much prefer to receive a variety of inexpensive childrens toys, or just one expensive childrens toy, - than, maybe, a range of childrens fashion clothing, kids designer bedding or boxes of quality chocolates. It can be rather difficult to judge if a gift is likely to “lack lustre” within a few hours of presentation. Almost always, educational toys, development toys, and childrens novelty gifts, provide ongoing pleasure, for a youngster, for lengthy periods of time.

Although most childrens toys help enormously in the development of babies, toddlers and children, - parents and minders, of preschool children, also need to be involved in childrens play. Any young child attempting to acquire new knowledge, whilst having fun, should not be left entirely to his/her own devices. Parents, especially, should always endeavour to make themselves available for periods of their offspring’s play times. These regular play times with a son/daughter help enormously, - both with regards to the child’s development and enjoyment – as well as helping to keep a strong bond between parents and their child.

Young children, especially, require tactile learning toys. Building bricks are often an excellent start towards paving the way of learning. Doing simple jigsaws and banging pegs through circular holes are also an enjoyable pastime for the very young. Splashing around with paint is great fun if it’s well supervised - and there are also thousands of excellent playthings on the market, any one of which can enrich the life of your offspring.
