Holiday Pet Care and Insurance

Good holiday pet care not only involves ensuring that pets are responsibly looked after when booking holidays away. Vetinary insurance cover may require some special consideration. This especially may apply for animals away from their homesteads during the family holiday time. Horse and pony owners need to ensure that everything is appropriate on their equine insurance policy.

Ensure that the pets are well cared for in your absence. If no-one is available to tend to your beloved cats and dogs in the homestead whilst you’re away, book your animals into a reputable cattery or dog kennels for a temporary stay.

Never assume that horses and ponies will be fine out in the fields. Endeavour to find someone who would be able to pop round occasionally to check on them - and just as importantly, their boundary fences.

If your intention is to take the dog with you on your family vacation, - there are many excellent camp sites, bed and breakfast places, and other wonderful establishments, which happily cater for families with dogs. (See sections on Holidays for dogs and cats).

Smaller pets in cages, such as rats, hamsters and mice, are often cared for in the homes of friends or relatives during holiday periods. Don't forget to have a minder coming round, if you have animals which may not so easily be transported.
Some creatures, such as tropical fish, will require very precise instructions leaving with their minders, to ensure daily well being.
Holiday pet care, and holiday pet insurance, probably need sorting separately. Once these things are in place, this provides clarity of mind to sort everything else for the pending holiday.
